Why specify ELI separately?
ELI identifies Ti-6Al-4V material with restricted interstitial elements. The distinction is not simply a request for higher strength; toughness and ductility expectations must also be considered. Documentation prepared for standard Grade 5 does not automatically satisfy an ELI requirement. Include the full alloy designation, product specification and delivery condition together. A substitution decision should not rely solely on similar commercial names.
R56401 and Grade 23 are distinct specification identities
ASTM F136 identifies wrought Ti-6Al-4V ELI as UNS R56401. ASTM titanium mill-product specifications identify Grade 23 as UNS R56407. Although the terms appear together in commercial usage, the two codes should not be treated as unconditionally interchangeable. Check the drawing’s specification and revision alongside product form. Verify conformity through the documentation for the supplied batch and the agreed order requirements.
Delivery scope follows the application
For bar or plate, state dimensions, machining allowance, surface condition, thermal condition, traceability and additional testing needs. The ELI name alone does not confer implant or final-device approval; assess application-specific requirements separately. Maintain titanium-appropriate cleanliness and heat management during welding, hot processing and machining. Retaining batch identity after cutting can also be included in the technical scope of the request.
