Values describe the grade, not the analysis of a specific batch. The applicable product specification and material certificate determine acceptance. A dash does not mean zero.

The position of Grade 9

Grade 9 contains approximately 3% aluminium and 2.5% vanadium. Greater strength than commercially pure titanium while retaining useful formability is a recognised feature. These properties are valuable together in thin-walled lightweight components. The grade is common where mechanical characteristics and suitability for the component geometry matter more than the highest possible strength.

Why it is associated with tubing

Aerospace hydraulic tubing needs to carry pressure while keeping weight low. Grade 9 serves this role through its strength and formability, with corrosion resistance also useful in piping applications. Bicycle tubing offers a related example: retaining mechanical durability within a lightweight structure is a central requirement explaining use of the alloy.

Differences from Grade 2 and Grade 5

Grade 2 is commercially pure titanium used particularly for corrosion resistance and formability. Grade 5 is a higher-strength alloy common in many mechanical parts. Grade 9 has its own aluminium-vanadium composition and serves thin, lightweight products. Increased strength over commercially pure titanium alongside retained formability explains its particular position within the family.

Ti-3Al-2.5V and Grade 9

Grade 9 is also known as Ti-3Al-2.5V and UNS R56320. Although associated with tubing, sheet, plate and bar can serve other connections and structural parts. Palladium-bearing Grade 18 is a separate alloy designation. Across Grade 9 applications, keeping mass low while providing mechanical strength and usable component geometry is a common theme.
