UNS S31703 - Family
- Austenitic
Where does a change from 316L start?
317L may be considered when a corrosion assessment finds 316L inadequate. Acid type, concentration, temperature and contaminants are assessed together. More molybdenum does not mean better performance in every medium or unrestricted seawater resistance; identify the expected damage mechanism.
Welding and forming plan
Low carbon benefits welded components, while post-weld surface condition, filler selection and the welding procedure remain part of the assessment. Conventional quench hardening is not expected from the austenitic structure. Work hardening during forming can, however, affect the manufacturing plan.
What to send with the grade
Tank sheet, heat-exchanger tube and machining bar have different acceptance requirements. Specify finished thickness or diameter, total quantity, product specification and certification. For a replacement part, the complete grade designation from the drawing or previous certificate is a clearer starting point than the 317L name alone.
Typical application areas
Chemical equipment, pulp and paper processes, heat-exchanger components.
Product and cutting options
Share the section and dimensions you require for this grade. Availability is assessed for each request; the catalogue does not represent live stock.
What to specify in your enquiry
- Grade designation and applicable material standard
- Section, finished dimensions and machining allowance
- Quantity, delivery condition and certificate requirements
Frequently asked questions
Can I request 1.4438 in cut lengths?+
Share your required section, dimensions and quantity. Our team will assess suitable supply and cutting options for the specific grade.
Are the listed grade designations interchangeable?+
Designation systems can overlap, but they do not make every specification identical. Use the exact standard and certificate requirements defined by your project.
