MATERIAL GROUP
Alloy steels
4340 VAR and Air Melt, 300M, 4330M, 9310, HP9-4-30, Nitriding 135 and H11. Heat treatment and melting route are assessed separately for the application.
High-strength steels do not all harden the same way
Through-section properties in quenched-and-tempered steel, a hard case and tough core in carburising steel, and a nitrided surface layer represent different selection problems. Define component loads and the final heat-treatment plan before considering substitution.
Melting route is part of the order
VAR or vacuum-melting requirements can be part of the production route in a specification. Similar Air Melt chemistry does not automatically satisfy a VAR requirement. State melting route, delivery condition and inspection requirements with the grade.
