Separate delivery condition from final properties
Annealed or normalized-and-tempered stock is not the same as the finished component in service. Planning should address final quenching and tempering, machining allowance and the section from which tests will be taken. One catalogue hardness cannot be transferred to every diameter.
Distinguishing VAR from Air Melt
Even with closely matching chemistry, air-melted 4340 does not automatically satisfy a VAR order. Remelting concerns cleanliness, solidification structure and acceptance requirements. For example, AMS 6414 for bar and forgings and AMS 6454 for flat products have different scopes.
Enquiries for fatigue-loaded components
For shaft or connection blanks, include the melting requirement, dimensions, delivery condition and inspection level alongside the grade. Corrosion protection and surface processing also belong in the manufacturing plan. A European material number alone should not replace the drawing’s 4340 designation and melting requirements.
Typical application areas
Highly loaded shafts, aerospace connections, forged component blanks.
Product and cutting options
Share the section and dimensions you require for this grade. Availability is assessed for each request; the catalogue does not represent live stock.
What to specify in your enquiry
- Grade designation and applicable material standard
- Section, finished dimensions and machining allowance
- Quantity, delivery condition and certificate requirements
Frequently asked questions
Can I request 4340 VAR in cut lengths?+
Share your required section, dimensions and quantity. Our team will assess suitable supply and cutting options for the specific grade.
Are the listed grade designations interchangeable?+
Designation systems can overlap, but they do not make every specification identical. Use the exact standard and certificate requirements defined by your project.
