How dimensional stability enters the manufacturing plan
Limited dimensional change during ageing can support near-final machining in the initial condition. However, tolerance size and geometric sensitivity determine final inspection needs. For a welded design, joining sequence and subsequent heat treatment require additional consideration.
A strength increase is not a corrosion upgrade
Custom 455 selection commonly concerns the balance of high strength and fabricability. Considering it in place of 17-4 PH does not establish better corrosion resistance in every environment. Fluid, surface condition and stresses need separate assessment; the hardest condition is not necessarily the most suitable for every application.
Define specification and final state together
AMS 5617 for the bar, wire and forging family and AMS 5860 for sheet, strip and plate are relevant examples. State delivery and ageing conditions alongside dimensions. A trade name or UNS number alone does not replace the requested melting route, documentation or mechanical acceptance requirements.
Typical application areas
Precision connections, hydraulic components, highly loaded pins and shafts.

- Quantity, delivery condition and certificate requirements
Frequently asked questions
Can I request Custom 455 in cut lengths?+
Share your required section, dimensions and quantity. Our team will assess suitable supply and cutting options for the specific grade.
Are the listed grade designations interchangeable?+
Designation systems can overlap, but they do not make every specification identical. Use the exact standard and certificate requirements defined by your project.
