AUSTENITIC

316L / 316LMo / 1.4435 Stainless Steel

1.4435 is a 316L stainless steel with higher nickel and molybdenum contents. It is used in chemical, pharmaceutical and food equipment where corrosion resistance and cleanable surfaces matter.

Properties of 1.4435 stainless steel

Within the familiar 316L family, 1.4435 has a higher alloy content. It retains a low carbon limit while minimum nickel rises to 12.5% and minimum molybdenum to 2.5%. Molybdenum contributes to resistance against localised corrosion in chloride-bearing environments, while nickel supports a stable austenitic structure. This composition is useful in process-contact components where surface quality also matters.

Use in process equipment

Valve bodies, connections, heat-exchanger components and hygienic equipment are among its applications. Bar, sheet and tube provide starting forms for different parts. Low carbon is useful in welded equipment, although surface cleanliness and the service environment also affect corrosion behaviour. Higher molybdenum does not make 1.4435 resistant to seawater at every temperature.

Is it the same grade as 1.4404?

Both 1.4404 and 1.4435 can appear under the names 316L and S31603, but their EN composition limits differ. The nickel and molybdenum ranges are higher in 1.4435; the shared 316L name does not make the two European designations interchangeable. Nor is 1.4435 identical to implant steel 1.4441. Additional requirements for a low-ferrite or specially clean producer version do not apply automatically to every 1.4435 product.
