Hexagon size is normally the across-flats distance between opposite parallel faces. Across corners is a different dimension and may matter for feeders, collets and fixture clearance. Specify size tolerance and surface requirements, including whether the existing flats remain on the finished component.
Plan lengths for series production
Hexagonal stock can reduce operations needed to produce flats, with savings depending on geometry and production volume. State whether full bars or cut pieces are required, along with feeder length and quantities. Grade selection must consider service environment and any welding as well as machinability.
