What kind of material is Alloy 926?

Alloy 926 belongs to the highly alloyed austenitic stainless steels that also include 904L. A molybdenum range of 6–7%, together with nitrogen, supports resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion. It is also identified as UNS N08926. The word “Alloy” does not make it a nickel-base alloy: this is an iron-base super-austenitic stainless steel.

Its role in saline and chemical environments

Seawater circuits, salt-concentration systems and chloride-bearing chemical equipment are established applications. The grade is also considered in certain acid processes. The same chloride concentration can have different effects in a cool liquid and around a hot surface. The value of 926 therefore depends on the fluid, temperature and surface conditions as well as its alloy percentages.

How it differs from 904L and 254 SMO

Higher molybdenum and nitrogen distinguish 926 from 904L in localised-corrosion resistance. Grade 254 SMO is another high-molybdenum super-austenitic steel, but its nickel, chromium, copper and nitrogen ranges differ from 926. Sharing the “6Mo” family description does not establish identical performance in every environment. Service temperature matters alongside the chemistry of the fluid.
