NICKEL-IRON

Alloy 800 / 1.4876 Nickel-Iron Alloy

Alloy 800 is a nickel–iron–chromium alloy with heat and oxidation resistance. It serves heat exchangers, heating-element sheaths and chemical process equipment. Although related to 800H and 800HT, it is a separate grade designated N08800.

The main properties of Alloy 800

Alloy 800 serves equipment exposed to temperature and gases together. Chromium helps form a protective oxide layer and nickel supports its austenitic structure. Its composition therefore addresses hot process conditions as well as ordinary atmospheric corrosion.

Heat exchangers and heaters

Heat-exchanger tubes transfer heat between fluids, while electric-heater sheaths separate an element from its surroundings. Alloy 800 serves both roles, together with petrochemical equipment and furnace components requiring surface resistance, ductility and hot strength.

How it differs from 800H and 800HT

800H and 800HT have more specific composition and structural requirements for sustained loading at high temperatures. Basic Alloy 800 is N08800. A shared family name does not give all three the same mechanical properties: a continuously loaded hot component and a heater sheath represent different duties within this family.

Heat resistance and chemical resistance

Oxidation resistance in hot gas and corrosion resistance in an acid solution describe different properties. Alloy 800 is principally associated with heaters and hot process equipment, rather than the specialised acid resistance of nickel–molybdenum grades.

Typical application areas

Heat exchangers, heater sheaths, process tubing and furnace equipment.
