Values describe the grade, not the analysis of a specific batch. The applicable product specification and material certificate determine acceptance. A dash does not mean zero.
What kind of stainless steel is 1.4835?
1.4835 is an austenitic stainless steel containing silicon, nitrogen and a small addition of cerium alongside chromium and nickel. This alloy balance contributes to a material that can protect its surface and carry load in hot service. Its chemical designation is X9CrNiSiNCe21-11-2 and its UNS identity is S30815. The trade name 253 MA is also widely recognised. The generic EN material definition does not automatically include every special characteristic of a particular branded product.
Why is it used in equipment that heats and cools?
Industrial furnaces do not always operate at one steady temperature. Loading, waiting periods and different operating stages can repeatedly heat and cool the metal surface. Resistance to oxidation during such temperature changes is an important characteristic of 1.4835. Silicon and cerium contribute to the behaviour of its protective surface layer, while nitrogen supports strength. The combination helps explain its use in thin and load-carrying parts within the hot zone.
Typical applications
Radiant tubes, furnace internals, hot conveying arrangements and heat-exposed connections are among the applications associated with this grade. It also has a role in thermal equipment for metals and glass production and in energy systems. These parts combine exposure to hot gases with a mechanical function. Describing 1.4835 simply as sheet that withstands heat would therefore be incomplete: retention of strength at elevated temperature is also relevant to its use.
Its relationship with 310S and 1.4818
310S, 1.4835 and 1.4818 belong to the broad heat-resistant stainless family but have different compositions. 310S is associated with higher nickel and chromium contents, whereas 1.4835 makes use of the combined contributions of silicon, nitrogen and cerium. Grade 1.4818, known by the trade name 153 MA, is a separate material too. Overlapping applications do not establish equivalence: each grade has a different balance in hot gases, temperature cycling and loading.
Typical application areas
Industrial furnaces, radiant tubes and hot conveying equipment.
