What is 1.4818 stainless steel?
1.4818 is a heat-resistant chromium-nickel steel with additions of silicon, nitrogen and cerium. It is identified as X6CrNiSiNCe19-10 and UNS S30415. These additions contribute to surface protection and mechanical strength at elevated temperature. The material is also associated with the trade name 153 MA. Although it shares a chromium-nickel basis with general-purpose 304 stainless, it is a different grade whose alloy balance is directed towards hot service.
What does strength at temperature mean?
Strength at room temperature alone does not describe how a component behaves when hot. A metal kept at elevated temperature can gradually change shape under a sustained load. In heat-resistant grades, this behaviour matters alongside surface oxidation. The ability to provide mechanical strength in hot service is one of the useful characteristics of 1.4818. It can therefore serve functional components in a hot zone, rather than being limited to covers and external panels.
Use in furnaces and thermal equipment
Applications include industrial furnace parts, components exposed to hot gases and heating systems. Sheet and plate offer useful geometries for broad internal surfaces and protective elements. The role of this grade is not to make every heat-exposed component from one material, but to serve applications combining temperature, surface resistance and strength. Gas composition and temperature changes can create different material duties even in separate zones of the same furnace.
Is it the same grade as 1.4835?
Similar trade names do not make 1.4818 and 1.4835 the same material. The two numbers define different chemical compositions, including a different balance of chromium and other additions. The names 153 MA and 253 MA therefore do not describe different thicknesses or simple quality levels of one alloy. Both are heat-resistant austenitic grades and their applications can overlap, but neither is an automatic substitute for the other.
Typical application areas
Furnace parts, heating equipment and hot-gas components.
