The place of 2404 in duplex stainless
2404 is a duplex stainless steel combining high strength with enhanced corrosion resistance. Chromium, nitrogen and molybdenum contribute to its response in chloride-containing environments. Within the lean duplex family, it offers higher corrosion resistance than more lightly alloyed options such as 2101. Tanks and process equipment needing load capacity alongside environmental durability are typical applications.
Resistance to localised corrosion
Chloride-bearing fluids can initiate small pits or corrosion within narrow gaps on some stainless surfaces. The alloy content of 2404 supports protection against these localised effects. This is important to surface durability in process equipment. The high mechanical strength of its duplex structure also contributes to the duties of the equipment under pressure or load.
Tanks and industrial systems
Process tanks, storage equipment and industrial structural elements illustrate its use. In these applications, large metal surfaces encounter the environment while carrying load. The grade can be useful when greater corrosion resistance than more lightly alloyed lean duplex grades is required. Its role is therefore explained by surface protection together with high strength.
Its relationship to 2205 and super duplex
2404 and 2205 can address similar corrosion requirements in certain environments, though their nickel, molybdenum and nitrogen contents differ. Super duplex grades such as 2507 form another, more highly alloyed group. 2404 combines a lean duplex approach with enhanced corrosion resistance; the designations 1.4662 / S82441 identify this particular composition.
