What does lean duplex mean?

1.4062 is one of the lower-alloyed stainless steels known as lean duplex. Its combined ferrite and austenite structure offers high yield strength compared with general-purpose austenitic grades. Chromium and nitrogen contribute to strength and corrosion protection. These characteristics are useful in industrial parts requiring load-carrying capability alongside a stainless surface.

Two phases working together

The high yield strength associated with duplex structure helps a component carry load without permanent deformation. Tanks and supporting components are clear examples. 1.4062 offers this mechanical characteristic with a low-nickel composition. Lean duplex describes that alloying approach, providing a distinct option from more highly alloyed stainless steels in many strength-focused applications.

Applications

Storage equipment, industrial structural elements and various mechanical components are among its uses. Such parts may encounter moisture or environmental exposure while carrying load. A magnetic response is normal for the duplex structure. Applications focus on situations where its mechanical properties and the required level of corrosion resistance are useful together.

Differences from 2205

Lean duplex 2202 / 1.4062 differs from common 2205 / 1.4462 in its lower alloy content. Molybdenum content in particular affects resistance in chloride environments. While 2205 and super duplex grades serve more demanding corrosive exposure, 1.4062 is used where high strength accompanies milder environmental conditions. That distinction helps explain the role of lean duplex.
