DUPLEX / SUPER DUPLEX

2101 / 1.4162 Stainless Steel

2101 / 1.4162 is a high-strength, low-nickel lean duplex stainless steel used in storage tanks, structural components and industrial equipment. Chromium and nitrogen combine with the low nickel content to provide a distinct balance of strength and corrosion resistance.

The defining characteristic of 2101

2101 is a lean duplex stainless steel offering high strength with a low-nickel composition. Ferrite and austenite are present together, with manganese and nitrogen contributing to its characteristics. Applications range from large tanks to industrial structures. High load-carrying capability compared with general-purpose stainless steels is one of its defining features.

What strength means for equipment

Yield strength describes how much load a metal can carry before permanent deformation begins. The duplex structure of 2101 is useful in tank bodies and supporting components. Depending on the design, it can contribute to more efficient use of section thickness and weight. Its value therefore includes a contribution to the mechanical structure alongside stainless surface protection.

Tank and structural applications

Storage tanks, pulp equipment, bridge components and water-control structures illustrate its use. These applications combine environmental exposure and mechanical loads within the same material. 2101 is magnetic because its structure contains ferrite. High yield strength is important to its established role in large surfaces and structural components.

Differences from 2304 and 2205

2101, 2304 and 2205 belong to the duplex family but differ in nickel, molybdenum and nitrogen contents. The low-nickel, manganese- and nitrogen-bearing composition of 2101 is a clear example of lean duplex alloying. Molybdenum-bearing 2205 is common in more demanding corrosive service. 2101 serves tanks and structural applications where high strength matters and environmental conditions suit the grade.
