PRECISION IN MATERIAL. CLARITY IN SUPPLY.

Soft magnetic alloys

Soft magnetic alloys respond readily to magnetic fields and follow changes in the field. They are used in sensors, measurement systems and magnetic shielding for sensitive equipment.

What does soft mean here?

Soft does not mean that the part bends by hand or lacks mechanical strength. It describes how easily the magnetisation can change. That behaviour is useful in electrical systems with changing fields and in detecting small magnetic signals. It differs from the ability of a permanent magnet to retain magnetisation.

Materials that guide magnetic fields

A magnetic shield reduces the effect of surrounding fields on sensitive equipment. Current-measurement components and sensors instead rely on how a field travels through the material. Different nickel–iron alloys are distinguished by their magnetic response and ability to carry magnetic flux. One magnetic alloy does not provide the same result in every device.

A functional property beyond composition

The presence of nickel and iron alone does not establish suitability for a specific magnetic application. Shielding, measurement and controlled expansion are different requirements. Reducing the effect of a magnetic field on a precision instrument and keeping its dimensions stable with temperature are different duties. The nickel–iron family provides options with different properties for each.
