Start with the connection type
A fitting name does not always identify its assembly method. A coupling may be threaded or socket welded; elbows and tees can require different end preparations. This concerns more than installation convenience. Mating pipe ends, the welding plan, access and disassembly requirements enter the choice. Stating end type prevents quotations for the wrong product.
A similar approximate diameter does not establish threaded compatibility. Thread system, pitch and sealing approach can differ. Explicitly state a designation such as NPT or BSP where specified. Readable markings and dimensions, rather than a photograph alone, help identify a replacement.
Distinguish run and branch on a tee
Equal and reducing tees are different products. Describe the two run ends and branch in the drawing order. Wall or schedule is needed alongside nominal size. If all three ends differ, identify their directions. This supports assessment of both layout and fit to the mating pipes.
Angle and radius are separate elbow dimensions
90 or 45 degrees describes direction change, not the full installation envelope. Long- and short-radius elbows differ in centre-to-end dimensions. Existing straight pipe lengths and surrounding equipment can constrain a replacement. State angle, radius class and product standard together.
Cutting an elbow on site to obtain an angle is different from specifying a standard fitting. End preparation, inspection and dimensional acceptance may need reassessment. If special geometry is required, describe it on a drawing rather than hiding the difference under a standard product name.
Include the material specification
A 316L marking does not define dimensions, production route and every test requirement. Material and dimensional standards address separate requirements. Pressure class is likewise not a service permission independent of material and temperature. Ask for the quotation to address the project acceptance requirements.
Complete the request with fitting type, dimensional order, wall, ends, standards and quantity. Add medium and temperature, and state certification or extra inspection at the start. This allows comparison of the same requirements rather than visually similar products of different scope.
