The role of higher molybdenum
Ti 6-2-4-6 contains aluminium, tin, zirconium and molybdenum. Approximately 6% molybdenum is an important compositional difference from the similarly named 6-2-4-2. It contributes to the ability to develop high strength and use in thicker sections. High mechanical properties alongside low density explain its role in aerospace applications.
Compressor and airframe applications
Compressor discs and blades carry mechanical loads at engine operating temperatures. Ti 6-2-4-6 is one of the titanium alloys serving parts where these conditions matter together. Aircraft structures also benefit from high strength relative to weight. Carrying substantial loads within a restricted section or mass is an important requirement behind its applications.
Fatigue behaviour
Moving engine parts and aircraft structures encounter repeated forces. Fatigue strength describes behaviour under those repeated loads. Alongside high strength, this characteristic matters in applications of Ti 6-2-4-6. Aerospace material requirements include functioning over many changing load cycles as well as carrying a single application of force.
Relationship to Grade 5 and 6-2-4-2
Also identified as UNS R56260, Ti 6-2-4-6 has a more complex composition than Grade 5. Its increased molybdenum relative to Ti 6-2-4-2 provides different mechanical characteristics. Both serve aerospace applications, while 6-2-4-6 is particularly known for high strength and thick-section properties. Bar and forgings are associated with these loaded component geometries.
