What the 6-2-4-2 name means
The name Ti 6-2-4-2 describes approximately 6% aluminium, 2% tin, 4% zirconium and 2% molybdenum, with titanium as the base metal. These additions provide mechanical characteristics useful at elevated temperature. It is known among near-alpha titanium alloys for hot aerospace components, with low density also valuable in rotating parts.
Hot compressor components
Gas-turbine compressor discs and blades encounter both hot air and mechanical forces. Low weight is useful in moving components, but strength must also be retained during operation. Ti 6-2-4-2 serves applications combining these needs. Compressor impellers and other hot structural parts also use the characteristics of the alloy.
Why creep resistance matters
A metal held under sustained load at elevated temperature can slowly change shape. This behaviour, called creep, matters in hot components. Ti 6-2-4-2 is known for its characteristics in such long-term applications. Its role includes parts requiring retention of shape and mechanical properties through service, beyond carrying a short-duration load.
Differences from Ti 6-2-4-6
Ti 6-2-4-6 is a similarly named but higher-molybdenum alloy, affecting strength and characteristics in thick sections. Ti 6-2-4-2 is particularly associated with long-term behaviour in hot applications. Product forms range from sheet components to thicker disc and blade geometries, with low weight and mechanical stability at temperature as the common aims.
Typical application areas
Compressor discs, blades, impellers, hot structural parts.
