Values describe the grade, not the analysis of a specific batch. The applicable product specification and material certificate determine acceptance. A dash does not mean zero.
What does the X8Cr24 designation describe?
Producer tables identify 1.4763 as X8Cr24, a ferritic steel with 23–26% chromium. The higher chromium content compared with general 430 explains its association with applications involving oxidation in hot air. Its ferritic structure is magnetic. The grade is not merged with another EN number solely because both are described as 446.
The distinction from 1.4749
Grade 1.4749 / X18CrN28 is also associated with the 446 family, but has a different composition with higher carbon and nitrogen ranges. The X8Cr24 table for 1.4763 cannot replace it. The complete material identity matters alongside the alloy family name, particularly in elevated-temperature components. The catalogue therefore retains separate EN identities.
Temperature resistance is not a single number
Protecting a surface in a hot environment and retaining shape under load are different properties. The distinction also applies to high-chromium ferritic steels. Gas composition, steady or changing temperature and component loading affect service limits. No universal maximum service temperature or mechanical strength is assigned to every product on this page.
Two different EN identities in the 446 family
The table summarises composition differences only. A shared 446 or S44600 reference does not establish identical limits.
