FERRITIC

X2CrNi12 / 1.4003 Stainless Steel

1.4003 is a low-chromium ferritic stainless steel for structural applications. In transport equipment, railway components and industrial structures it offers better corrosion resistance than carbon steel. Its main role is functional construction rather than a permanently spotless decorative finish.

Stainless steel for structural service

1.4003 is a ferritic stainless steel used in transport equipment and industrial structures. Better corrosion resistance than carbon steel is valuable in large bodies and parts exposed to the weather. Its low-carbon composition also suits welded construction. The grade is associated primarily with durable functional components rather than bright decorative surfaces.

Understanding its corrosion resistance

The protection offered by 1.4003 can make a practical difference compared with carbon steel exposed to moisture and environmental conditions. Surface staining can nevertheless occur in salty or more aggressive surroundings. Appearance expectations therefore matter: a surface acceptable on a loaded industrial body may differ from the finish expected on a decorative panel.

Transport and industrial equipment

Railway wagons, vehicle bodies, containers and conveyor components illustrate its applications. Such equipment carries loads while encountering rain, moisture or industrial surroundings. Greater corrosion resistance than carbon steel helps explain its established use. Its magnetic structure and mechanical characteristics make it a familiar option for robust industrial construction.

Differences from 430 and 304

The role of 1.4003 differs from that of common grades such as 430 and 304. Higher-chromium ferritic 430 is widely used for equipment and cladding where appearance matters. Austenitic 304 offers broad general corrosion resistance and formability. 1.4003 serves structural applications where economical alloying and protection against corrosion are considered together.
