Properties of 1.4122 stainless steel
1.4122 is a martensitic steel used in mechanical parts that need stainless properties alongside strength and hardness. Its composition contains approximately 17 percent chromium and an addition of molybdenum, distinguishing it from general-purpose 13 percent chromium martensitic steels. Identified as X39CrMo17-1, the grade has a place in applications such as load-bearing shafts and valve components operating within moving mechanisms.
Pump, valve and machinery components
Pump shafts, spindles, pins, pistons and valve elements are established applications. These parts have something in common: they carry forces while their surfaces are exposed to the surrounding environment. The balance of hardness and corrosion resistance offered by 1.4122 is useful in such mechanical duties. Round bar is a familiar form for these cylindrical components, with automotive and general machinery equipment among the associated applications.
Corrosion resistance and surface properties
Molybdenum and the relatively high chromium content support use in mildly corrosive environments. The material can also provide a polished surface, which is useful in various equipment components. This does not make it resistant to every liquid. Seawater and concentrated chloride environments present different demands from general atmospheric exposure. The characteristic value of this grade is the combination of hardness, mechanical strength and a useful level of corrosion resistance within one component.
Its place among martensitic grades
The 420 family spans several carbon levels and hardness balances, while the chromium and molybdenum combination of 1.4122 offers a different option for mechanical parts. Grade 431 is another material, containing nickel and associated with a balance of strength and toughness. Use in similar components does not make these steels identical. The composition of 1.4122 gives it a distinct role among stainless materials for pump and valve components.
Typical application areas
Pump shafts, valve parts and mechanical components.
