EN 10204 3.1 and traceability: connecting the document to the part

Check certificate type, product specification and material identity after cutting together.

What does 3.1 mean?

EN 10204 defines types of inspection documents for metallic products. A type 3.1 inspection certificate includes a statement of conformity to the order and results from specific inspection. It is validated by the manufacturer’s authorised representative independent of the manufacturing department; this does not necessarily mean an external organisation has inspected every item. Type 3.2 involves an additional independent validation arrangement and should be planned when ordering if required.

3.1 is neither a stainless grade nor a product standard. Chemical, mechanical and delivery requirements are defined in the applicable product specification. Alongside a claim of 3.1 certification, therefore, check grade, standard and delivery condition. The presence of the document does not establish that every possible additional test, including tests never specified in the order, has been performed.

Which connections should be checked?

At goods receipt, read the certificate against the order and physical material rather than simply filing it. Assess chemical analysis, mechanical results and heat-treatment information with the test scope and applicable specification. Where orientation, section size or test temperature matters to the project, check the corresponding records. Do not treat typical datasheet values as actual test results for the delivered batch.

  • Are manufacturer and document identity legible, and is the required document type stated?
  • Do grade, product standard and delivery condition match the order?
  • Can the heat / batch number be linked to the label, material or controlled tracking record?
  • Are the required tests and acceptance values actually covered by the document?

Identity must continue after cutting

When many pieces are cut from one parent bar, material identity needs to follow each piece or controlled package. Where direct marking is unsuitable for a small item, labels and cutting records may be used under the quality plan. The essential requirement is an unbroken link from the item back to parent material and the relevant document. Establish a method that prevents different heats becoming mixed in one package.

Resolve missing or conflicting information before releasing material into production. Define any additional analysis, mechanical testing or third-party inspection separately. A later test report should not be assumed to reconstruct a lost batch connection automatically. Effective traceability depends on the certificate, identification and records working together. Preserve the same connection during repacking and transfers between stores, and recheck label legibility and access to the document during dispatch preparation.
