What kind of alloy is L-605?

Cobalt is the principal metal in L-605, with chromium, tungsten and nickel as further important constituents. Chromium supports surface protection, while tungsten contributes to mechanical properties at temperature. These characteristics are useful in parts carrying load while exposed to hot gases. Combining a mechanical duty with hot service explains its established role in aerospace engines.

A useful property for hot components

In engine parts, temperature affects load capacity as well as the metal surface. L-605 belongs to cobalt alloys used where strength at temperature matters. Oxidation resistance describes protection against the effect of hot gases on the surface. The two characteristics address different requirements across components ranging from hot springs to engine parts.

Applications

Aerospace engine components, valve parts and springs are principal applications. These parts can encounter mechanical loads and environmental exposure alongside temperature. L-605 also appears in certain medical components. Each use has its own material standards and product requirements, so a particular medical suitability cannot be established from the alloy name alone.

Difference from other cobalt alloys

L-605 is also identified as 2.4964 and UNS R30605. Its tungsten-bearing composition and high-temperature role distinguish it from cobalt-containing materials such as Elgiloy and MP35N. Wire, bar and flat products serve different component geometries. Across these forms, strength at elevated temperature combined with surface protection remains its distinctive characteristic.

Typical application areas

Engine components, springs, valve parts, precision equipment.
