What kind of material is 1.4923?
1.4923, designated X22CrMoV12-1, is a martensitic steel developed for strength at elevated temperature. Its chromium, molybdenum and vanadium composition is associated particularly with hot, loaded components in power-generation equipment. Strength at room temperature is only part of the picture in these applications. A component must also perform while it is hot and carries forces for long periods. This combination explains the applications associated with 1.4923.
Turbines and hot fasteners
Steam-turbine components and heat-resistant fasteners are recognised applications. The steel is also associated with boilers, pressure equipment and other energy systems. A turbine component and a hot fastener have different geometries, but both work where heat and mechanical loading occur together. This is why 1.4923 is associated with load-bearing parts in power equipment rather than primarily with general-purpose stainless enclosures.
What elevated-temperature strength means
Resistance to hot gases at a surface and the ability to carry a mechanical load while hot are different properties. The important characteristic of 1.4923 is its strength for the latter type of application. Molybdenum and vanadium contribute to its behaviour at elevated temperature. The effects of heat also depend on time, so a single temperature figure cannot describe every operating condition of a turbine component or fastener.
How it differs from general-purpose stainless steel
The focus of 1.4923 is mechanical strength at elevated temperature; its corrosion resistance is not treated as equivalent to an austenitic stainless steel such as 316L. It is not a general substitute for chloride or saline service. Nor is it interchangeable with furnace steels such as 310S simply because both are associated with heat. It has its own role as a turbine and power-generation steel for loaded components.
Typical application areas
Turbine parts, hot fasteners and power-generation equipment.
