AUSTENITIC

X15CrNiSi20-12 / 1.4828 Stainless Steel

1.4828 is a heat-resistant austenitic stainless steel for furnaces and hot-gas equipment. Its chromium, nickel and silicon composition provides resistance to surface oxidation at elevated temperatures. It has a different application range from general process stainless steels.

Stainless for hot environments

1.4828 is a heat-resistant stainless steel used in equipment exposed to hot air and gases. Its chromium, nickel and silicon composition supports a protective oxide layer on the hot surface. Furnace components and hot-gas bodies are familiar examples. This role emphasises different characteristics from general process stainless steels exposed to water or chemical liquids.

Oxidation and strength at temperature

At high temperatures, gases can react with the metal surface through oxidation. The heat-resistant composition of 1.4828 helps protect against this effect. That is particularly useful in heat shields and covers. For loaded hot components, mechanical strength also matters: surface protection and behaviour under load address different equipment requirements.

Furnace and hot-gas applications

Furnace covers, protective plates, hot-gas bodies and auxiliary equipment components are among its applications. Sheet and plate are familiar forms in parts separating or protecting large areas within a hot environment. Response to hot gases explains the main role of the grade. Resistance to concentrated chemical liquids belongs to a different application area with different alloy priorities.

Differences from 310S and 314

1.4828 is discussed alongside heat-resistant stainless grades such as 310S and 314 but has its own composition. Their chromium, nickel and silicon contents differ, affecting behaviour in hot gases. The name 309S is not an exact synonym for 1.4828 either. X15CrNiSi20-12 describes the chromium-nickel-silicon character of this particular material.
