What is Ti 10-2-3?
Ti 10-2-3 contains approximately 10% vanadium, 2% iron and 3% aluminium, with the full designation Ti-10V-2Fe-3Al. This high-strength, beta-dominant titanium alloy serves aerospace components needing strong mechanical characteristics alongside low weight. Applications in thick, loaded parts are particularly characteristic.
Landing gear and structural components
Landing-gear components and loaded aircraft structures encounter large forces and repeated loading. Ti 10-2-3 is used for toughness alongside high strength in these duties. Toughness describes the ability to absorb energy before fracture. A lightweight part therefore needs appropriate behaviour under force as well as the ability to carry a substantial load.
Its place in the beta titanium family
Beta titanium alloys form an important family in high-strength mechanical applications. Ti 10-2-3 offers strength, toughness and fatigue characteristics useful together in this setting. Fatigue concerns behaviour under repeated loads. Aircraft parts carrying load through many operating cycles illustrate why these characteristics are required within the same material.
Difference from Grade 5
Grade 5, with composition Ti-6Al-4V, is a titanium alloy with broad applications. Higher vanadium and an iron addition give Ti 10-2-3 different mechanical characteristics. High-strength forgings and landing-gear components are characteristic uses. Low weight matters to both grades, while performance in more demanding load-carrying applications defines the particular role of 10-2-3.
Typical application areas
Landing-gear components, load-bearing airframe structures.
